1. Match the voltage rating
The capacitor's voltage rating should meet or exceed the motor's operating voltage with headroom for surges. Undersizing here is the fastest way to a blown capacitor.
2. Get the capacitance (µF) right
Too little capacitance and the motor struggles to start or run underpowered; too much and it overheats. The motor's nameplate or manufacturer spec is the source of truth, not a rough estimate.
3. Starting vs running capacitors
A starting capacitor gives a single-phase motor the torque to get moving and disconnects seconds later; a running capacitor stays in circuit the whole time the motor runs, and needs to handle continuous duty. They are not interchangeable.
4. Buy for the application, not just the motor
